RECAP / Rebel Yell
EVERETT, Wash. – Dominic Zwerger scored twice and Patrick Bajkov racked up a three point night to lift the first place Everett Silvertips to a wire-to-wire finish in a 4-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday night in WHL action at XFINITY Arena.
The Silvertips, improving to 8-1-1 in the last 10 games, enjoyed the return of Matt Fonteyne who had an assist in his return to the lineup while Eetu Tuulola converted on a third period penalty shot to support Carter Hart, who made 27 saves for the victory
The Silvertips won for the 10th time in 14 lifetime meetings over Red Deer, facing off in the only meeting of the regular season while the Silvertips embarked successfully on a 12-game journey featuring six opponents from the Eastern Conference.
Zwerger greeted ex-teammate Lasse Petersen with a wrister past the blocker, 26 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead and Bajkov built the lead to two goals on a wraparound that caromed off traffic at the 2:13 mark.
Zwerger’s second goal of the game lifted the Tips to a 3-0 lead at 6:53 of the second period on a power play, after Bajkov and Connor Dewar’s bids for rebound goals were foiled by a scrambling Red Deer penalty kill until Zwerger stashed a third chance from between the circles.
Michael Spacek finished a cross-ice one-timer from Brandon Hagel to get the Rebels on the board at 14:07 of the second period, but the Silvertips iced the game in the third period when Tuulola, previously hauled down on a breakaway, tucked a deke through Petersen’s five hole for a penalty shot goal with 8:49 to play in regulation.
Petersen took the loss on 28 stops.
NOTES: Scratches included Orrin Centazzo, Brandson Hein, Lucas Skrumeda, Spencer Gerth, and Brett Kemp … Silvertips assistant coach Mitch Love and Kemp were away, currently with Hockey Canada at the World U17 Hockey Challenge … Kevin Constantine improved to 6-2, head to head all-time with Red Deer head coach Brent Sutter (the two have combined for 13 years of NHL coaching experience, and have met all eight times at the WHL level) … Zwerger, who led the Silvertips with 14 points in October, has points in 12 of the last 13 games.
