Win streak ends on Pink The Rink Night

EVERETT – Before a sold-out crowd of 8,279 rowdy fans on their fourth annual “Pink the Rink” night, the Everett Silvertips came up just short on the ice in a 3-2 defeat against the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at Comcast Arena.  The loss ends Everett’s four game winning streak and give Seattle a 2-0 lead in the ten-game season series.

Tyler Sandhu and Reid Petryk scored goals for the Silvertips, while rookie defenseman Cole MacDonald earned his first career point with an assist.  Goaltender Austin Lotz returned from injury to make his first start in three weeks, stopping 16 of 19 shots in defeat.  Seattle won the special teams battle with one powerplay goal in three chances and a shorthanded score as Everett went 0 for 4 on their powerplay.

The Silvertips outshot Seattle 8-4 in the first, but the game was at tied one after 20 minutes of play.  Everett opened the scoring when Cole MacDonald snuck a shot on the goal from the blueline, allowing Tyler Sandhu to bang it in the rebound.  Seattle tied it just over three minutes later as Connor Honey’s one-timer late in a Thunderbirds powerplay made it a 1-1 game.

Everett couldn’t capitalize on two powerplay opportunities in the second period before Seattle took the lead with a shorthanded goal.  The T-Birds caused a blueline turnover as the ‘Tips finished a line change, creating a breakaway goal for Alexander Delnov, who lift a backhander over Austin Lotz.  The Silvertips led the shot clock 19-12 after two periods, but trailed the game 2-1.

Everett tied it up eight minutes into the third when Ryan Murray stepped out of the penalty box and into a 2-on-1 rush with Reid Petryk, who received Murray’s pass and cut to his backhand to beat Justin Myles with his fifth goal of the year.  Connor Honey put Seattle back on top just 59 seconds later however, wiring a screened wrist shot to the top left corner to make it 3-2.  The ‘Tips generated plenty of scoring chances in the period and outshot Seattle 10-7, but weren’t able to find the equalizer in the loss.

The Silvertips allowed a season low 19 shots against on their way to outshooting the Thunderbirds 29-19.  Justin Myles stopped 27 of 29 shots in goal for Seattle to earn his first career WHL win.
