EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips (@WHLSilvertips), two-time Western Conference champions and seven time U.S. Division champions of the Western Hockey League, announced six prospects they selected in the 2019 WHL Draft were selected as participants in respective Under-16 Provincial Camps across Canada.
The following 2004-born prospects were selected for provincial camp participation:
- (F) Ben Hemmerling
- (G) Ian Mills
- (G) Evan May
- (F) Austin Roest
TEAM MANITOBA (Top 40 Camp)
- (D) Dexter Whittle
- (F) Ryder Ringor
The camps assist with the selection process for each province’s roster for the WHL Cup. Last season, the Silvertips had a pair of prospects – defensemen Olen Zellweger (Alberta) and Ty Gibson (B.C.) compete in the Canada Winter Games, held every four years in place of the WHL Cup, and each year’s event features the highest-rated players in the under-16 age category from the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan in partnership with BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, Saskatchewan Hockey Association, Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada.
The four-team round robin tournament format is the first step in the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence and assists the four Western Provincial Hockey Associations in evaluating top prospects of the age group for future high performance programs.
The Silvertips selected forward Ben Hemmerling with their first selection (third round, 49th overall) in the 2019 WHL Draft. The Sherwood Park, Alberta native last season led the Northern Alberta (Bantam Prep) program with 42 assists and was second on the club with 53 points (11g-42a) in 30 games. Hemmerling also was third in program playoff scoring with seven points (2g-5a) in five games.
