TIPS WIN: Sizing Up

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Carter Hart furnished 29 saves and Martin Fasko-Rudas’ second period goal stood as the game winner as the Everett Silvertips toppled the Vancouver Giants in a 2-1 victory before 2,536 fans at Langley Events Centre on Friday in WHL action.

The Silvertips maintained their U.S. Division lead (9 points) and Western Conference lead (5 points) while reducing their magic number to 13 points, outright, to clinch home ice advantage in the opening round of the WHL Playoffs. Connor Dewar opened the scoring and the combo of Matt Fonteyne and Garrett Pilon each added a pair of assists.

Hart and counterpart David Tendeck exchanged saves on high-grade looks in a scoreless first period, before Dewar put the Tips ahead just 1:54 into the second period. He cleaned up a rebound after Tendeck stopped a Garrett Pilon one-timer bid, for his 31st goal of the season.

Davis Koch’s 21st goal of the season tied the game, 1-1 at 10:54 of the second period on a rebound at the left post. But just 1:22 later, Fasko-Rudas parked a rebound in the crease after Tendeck struggled to handle a shot from the wing which caromed off the boards and Tendeck’s back, and into a crease left open for Fasko-Rudas.

Hart made nine saves in the third period and helped keep the Giants at bay on a late third period penalty kill, preserving the victory.

Tendeck made 26 saves to take the loss.
