U.S. PROSPECTS DRAFT // G Miles Roberts, D Gavin Reed

Silvertips Select Goaltender Miles Roberts Fourth Overall, Defenseman Gavin Reed in the 2020 WHL U.S. Prospects Draft

EVERETT, WA – The Everett Silvertips, seven time U.S. Division champions of the Western Hockey League, today selected goaltender Miles Roberts in the first round (fourth overall) and defenseman Gavin Reed in the second round (41st overall) in the 2020 WHL U.S. Prospects Draft, hosted exclusively online for 2005-born prospects out of WHL appointed regions of the United States.

The Silvertips made Roberts the first goaltender selected in the draft (Costa Mesa, Calif.) after competing this past season with the Anaheim Junior Ducks program, while Reed (Dayton, Minn.) recently completed his season with the Sioux Falls Power.

“Today’s selections in the 2020 WHL U.S. Prospects Draft leave us satisfied with we’re headed,” said Silvertips general manager Garry Davidson. “Miles and Gavin are two talented individuals who have been thoroughly examined in the weeks leading up to today, and fit our projections in what we’re looking for in each position. We’re looking forward to educating them on the exceptional benefits of playing in our league, downtown Everett, and taking advantage of opportunities they have when suiting up in a Silvertips jersey.”

“It’s also important to understand today is only the beginning of our search for the next wave of U.S. born talent.”

Roberts, who competed this season with the Jr. Ducks 14U program (T1EHL), also ranked tied for the lead at the bantam level with a .926 save percentage and earned a 1.45 goals against average in 37 games with Anaheim. The Costa Mesa, Calif. native appeared in nine games with the Jr. Ducks in T1EHL play with a .936 save percentage and earned a season best 36 saves in his season finale against the Los Angeles Jr. Kings on Feb. 17.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound goaltender also competed in eight games for Lutheran High (USHS-CA) with a 2.28 goals-against-average and .895 save percentage.

“Size is a gifted advantage when it comes to Miles and his potential,” said Davidson. “He delivered exceptional results as a goaltender who had to steal games this last year and each time out, gave his team a chance to win. Given the fact he still projects room to grow physically, has worked with individuals familiar to our program, has performed with the technique and similar poise Carter Hart and Dustin Wolf had at his age, and has shown genuine interest in our program, we’re extremely excited about his future.”

Gavin Reed had 11 points in 18 games this past season.

Reed, a native of Dayton, Minn., combined for 11 points (5g-6a) in 18 games for both the Penguins of the Minnesota Bantam Elite League and the Sioux Falls Power U14 squad (T1EHL). He tied the Penguins lead for points (9) among defensemen in 14 games, while earning a goal and an assist in four games with Sioux Falls.

Reed’s father, Jace, suited up for two seasons as a defenseman for the Univ. of North Dakota (NCAA), and was selected in the fifth round (86th overall) by the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League Entry Draft.

“Gavin has the tools and foundation to become an ideal Silvertip,” said Davidson. “We like his growth potential and level of execution while jumping into the play. His father, Jace, furnished a career as a 6-foot-3 defenseman that included experience at North Dakota, and an opportunity granted when he was drafted by the New York Islanders. That resource for growth is a terrific advantage. Gavin embraces the modern facets of our game and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead for his next step.”
