VICTORIA, BC – The Everett Silvertips opened a three-in-three set with a 5-0 loss to the host Victoria Royals Friday night at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Silvertips will look to reverse their fortunes this weekend with back-to-back home games against Vancouver and Medicine Hat on Saturday and Sunday.
The Silvertips hit three posts in the game on their best scoring chances as Victoria goaltender Patrik Polivka (8-5-0-0) got his first career shutout with 20 saves. Everett was outshot 36-20 in defeat and went 0 for 3 on the powerplay while killing off four of five Royals powerplays.
Victoria built an early shot advantage in the first period as Everett shook off the rust from a six-day layoff. The Royals scored the game’s first goal at 6:53 when Ben Walker’s shot was deflected through the air in front, where Alex Gogolev batted it into the net to give Victoria a 1-0 edge.
The Royals added the lead midway through the second stanza as Jamie Crooks banged in a centering feed from Ben Walker right in front to make it 2-0 at 7:19. Victoria extended the lead to three less than five minutes later during a 5-on-3 powerplay when Walker scored on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. The game turned chippy late the period with the teams combining for a total of 54 penalty minutes in the second alone.
Brandon Fushimi made it 4-0 for Victoria in the third period, finishing a centering pass from Logan Fisher at 5:49 and bringing Daniel Cotton into the game to relieve Austin Lotz. Crooks capped the scoring with a breakaway goal later in the period in the Royals’ 5-0 win. Austin Lotz (2-8-0-1) stopped 23 shots in nearly 46 minutes of work before Cotton came in to make eight saves on nine shots in the final 14:11.
