Mappin, Sandhu in Action at U17 Tourney

EVERETT – Silvertips forwards Ty Mappin and Tyler Sandhu finished fifth with Team Pacific at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville & Drummondville, Quebec this week.  Silvertips prospect Justin Baudry also played in the tournament with Team West, who finished ninth.

The event brings together the top players in the world born in 1996 or later.  The tournament is made up of 10 teams:  five regional Canadian teams (Pacific, West, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic) and five international teams – including the United States.  Team Pacific is comprised of players from British Columbia and Alberta, while Team West consists of players hailing from Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Mappin (Big Valley, AB) and Sandhu (Richmond, BC) participated as Team Pacific won three of its four preliminary round games at the U-17 challenge.  Unfortunately all three wins (over Russia, Finland and Team West) came in overtime or shootouts, depriving Pacific of crucial points as they fell just one point short of a spot in the semifinals.  Team Pacific then faced Team Ontario in the fifth place game, winning a 7-6 thriller on Thursday with Sandhu assisted on the game-winning goal late in regulation.  Sandhu finished the tournament with two assists, while Mappin chipped in one.

Sandhu (Richmond, BC) is currently tied for third on the Silvertips with ten goals and ranks among the WHL’s rookie leaders in both goal and points this season.  Originally a second-round bantam pick of Portland, Sandhu was acquired in a trade with the Winterhawks in May.  Mappin (Big Valley, AB) was Everett’s first-round selection (7th overall) in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.  The skilled 5-foot-11, 170-pound centerman has scored four goals and assisted on six others in 34 games for the Silvertips this year.

Silvertips forward Dawson Leedahl (Saskatoon, SK) was tabbed to skate for Team West before suffering a lower-body injury that held him out of the event.  Everett’s second-round pick in the 2011 Bantam Draft, Leedahl has two goals and five points in 33 games with the ‘Tips this season.  Defenseman Justin Baudry (LaBroquerie, MB), who is on Everett’s protected list, and Team West are looking for their first win in the tournament Wednesday evening against Pacific after suffering losses to Sweden, Russia and Finland.
