ROOKIE GAME: Lyda In Wait

Watch more on Tips TV >

EVERETT, Wash. – Goaltender Blake Lyda allowed just one goal in the second half of action and Alonzo Coburn’s go-ahead goal with 10:30 left stood as the game winner, lifting Team Green to a 4-3 victory over Team Green in the Silvertips 2017 Rookie Game at XFINITY Arena on Saturday.

Lyda, a 2002-born goaltender and signed by the Silvertips after his selection in the fourth round in this summer’s WHL Draft, stopped Grey’s extra attacker rally in the final seconds to preserve the win for Green and coaches Harry Mahood and Vlad Spektor.

Phase 1 of Silvertips training camp will conclude Sunday with the annual Green vs. Grey Game, traditionally featuring select returning players from the Tips roster and prospects.

Mikol Sartor stashed a wide open rebound to put Grey ahead, 1-0 early in the first half, but Walker Erickson leveled the game, 1-1 with help from Cameron Reid and Gianni Lattanzio.

2002-born forward Jack Oleksiuk sniped a bid from the right circle to give Green their first lead, 2-1 with a set-up from Colby Sabourin. Brady Whitely then padded the Green lead to 3-1 on a penalty shot goal with ten minutes left in the half.

Gage Goncalves, with help from Josh Zary, ignited a two-goal rally for Grey with 7:37 to go in the half, and Jake Alcaraz was the sole individual from Team Grey to beat Lyda early in the second half for a 3-3 tie.

Coburn, a Kenmore native who spent last season with the 16U Jr. Silvertips, roofed a shot from the left circle under the crossbar with 10:30 to play, restoring Team Green’s one-goal cushion.

Lyda then took over, neutralizing several Team Grey scoring chances and stopped the final push with ten seconds left on an attempted re-direction at net.

Sunday brings the annual Green vs. Grey Game, 1:30 p.m. at XFINITY Arena. Fans are invited to enter through the main doors at the intersection of Hewitt Ave. and Oakes Ave. Doors for the Green vs. Grey game open at 1:00 pm on Sunday, 30 minutes prior to opening face-off.

NOTES: Scouts Mike DeAngelis and Shawn Webb served as coaches for Team Grey … the game featured four players from Silvertips draft classes.
